SULLY SIGNS FOR MIDLANDS
Young former loanee signs permanent deal for 2025
We are pleased to announce that we have signed Sullivan Medforth on a one-year deal following his release from Super League side Hull FC.
The 19-year old half-back, who can also play at full-back, spent three years in The Airlie Birds’ academy system. Having helped them reach the play-off semi-finals on two occasions, he was named by then-Head Coach Tony Smith as part of the first team squad for the 2024 season. Whilst Medforth did not make a Super League appearance in what proved to be a difficult season for Hull FC, he joined the Canes on loan ahead of deadline day in August with a number of last-minute signings as the club fought with Workington Town and North Wales Crusaders for the final play-off spots.
Sully played three times for the Canes in 2024, making his debut in a baptism of fire against League One Champions Oldham at Boundary Park. He then went on to feature in (and kick three conversion as part of) our 18-6 away victory to Cornwall that all but secured us a play-off place, before scoring a try in his final appearance as we narrowly lost 28-22 to eventual play-off winners Hunslet on the final day of the regular season. Sully will be one of five players capable of playing in the halves, alongside Callum McLelland, Jake Sweeting, David Hewitt and Ethan Newboult.
Sully on joining the Canes:
“I’m really happy to be back here as I enjoyed my loan spell here last season. The club is going in the right direction with good people in and around it.
It is the perfect fit for me to start playing my best rugby again and to rip in for the squad and see where it takes us.”
Head Coach Mark Dunning on signing Sully:
“We’re delighted to welcome Sully and his family back to the club and the Canes family on a permanent basis.
Sully came in last year prior to deadline day, integrated well, added value and showed glimpses of his undoubted ability and potential.
He adds real strength in depth and helps create flexibility across some key areas of the group and we look forward to working with him again and seeing what impact he can bring.”
