Hurricanes sign former Super League and Championship forward for two years

We are delighted to announce the signing of experienced forward Mikey Wood from Swinton Lions until the end of the 2026 season.

Wood, 28, has played almost 200 professional games at Super League, Championship and League One level. Able to play at both prop and loose forward, Mikey’s career started at Super League side Huddersfield Giants where he made two appearances alongside a number of short loan spells at Halifax, Newcastle Thunder and Oldham between 2015 and 2017. He also went on to play almost 30 times for Bradford on a season-long loan during the 2018 season.

His performances for the Bulls in League One saw him sign a permanent contract with Bradford for the 2019 season, where he made 24 appearances and scored a try before signing for Newcastle Thunder ahead of the 2020 season. Mikey made five appearances and scored a try for Thunder in League One prior to the season being curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a further eight appearances in 2021 when Newcastle were promoted to the Championship. He then signed for Hunslet for the remainder of the 2021 season where he went on to make 13 appearances and scored three tries.

Mikey then swapped League One and South Leeds for the Championship and Sheffield, where he scored five tries in 49 appearances during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He also made a sole dual-registration appearance for the Canes as he was part of the 18-man squad that demolished Doncaster 41-10 at the Eco-Power Stadium in 2023. This attracted the attention of his most recent club Swinton Lions, who signed him on a two-year deal. He went on to make 24 appearances for the Lions this season, scoring one try.

Head Coach Mark Dunning on securing Mikey:

We’re delighted to welcome Mikey and his family to the club and the Cannes family on a permanent basis.

Mikey is a direct, hard-working, skilful middle who was very sought after due to his performances in the Championship this season and in prior seasons. It’s great that he has bought into our vision and is onboard for the journey we’re on for the next two years.

He is coming into the prime of his career and with a wealth of experience in both Championship and Super League, so we’re excited by what he will add to our group going forward.

Mikey on joining the Canes:

I’m really looking forward to my first year at the Hurricanes in 2025!  With the quality of players and coaching staff at the club, we will be pushing for that top spot in League One. I’m really looking forward to strengthening the forward pack with my experience and my work-hard mentality. There’s an exciting year ahead.

Wood joins Elliot Morris, Zeus Silk, Aiden Roden and Ryan Johnson as one of our new signings for 2025, but we’ve still got more news to share in the coming weeks.
