TYRER JOINS ON LOAN
Prolific winger joins Canes from Roughyeds
We are delighted to confirm we have signed Cian Tyrer on loan from Championship side Oldham until the end of the 2025 season.
Tyrer, 24, went through Wigan Warriors academy system before signing with then-Championship side Newcastle Thunder for the 2021 season. Cian made four appearances and scored a try before joining League One’s Rochdale Hornets on loan for the rest of the season, where he went on to score two tries in six games. Those performances earned him a permanent contract with Rochdale for 2022, where he scored an impressive 18 tries in 22 games and netted 38 of Rochdale’s points during their 102-4 demolition of West Wales Raiders. Tyrer signed an extension to his contract for the 2023 season and had another impressive year, scoring eight tries in 16 games.
After two seasons at Rochdale, Cian made the switch to their historic rivals in Oldham for the 2024 season on an initial one-year deal, and Tyrer made his mark early on with an exceptional try-scoring record of 29 tries in just 13 games, with 10 of those tries coming in back-to-back games against Hunslet (6) and Cornwall (4), as Oldham ran roughshod over the division and secured automatic promotion to the Championship. Towards the end of that season, he went on loan to Workington Town and made two appearances, scoring one try.
His abilities in League One secured him an extension to his Oldham contract for the 2025 season, however his appearances for the club have been limited to a sole appearance against Barrow towards the start of the season before making two loan appearances for Rochdale Hornets against Workington and Swinton before suffering an injury that led to a spell on the sidelines. Tyrer is now back to 100% and raring to go in a Midlands shirt!
CanesTV spoke with Head Coach Mark Dunning about bringing Cian on loan:
“It’s great to welcome Cian to the club for the rest of the season. I’d like to extend my thanks to Dave Peet and everybody at Oldham for getting this deal done as we approach the end of the transfer window.
He’s a player that’s had great education through his career with four years in the Wigan system and since then wherever he’s played he’s shown his qualities and undoubted try scoring instincts.
Capable of playing as a full back or winger, he will add to our group and we’re looking forward to seeing him in a Canes shirt.”
CanesTV also spoke with Kye regarding his loan move to Midlands:
“I’m really looking forward to joining Midlands. Having spoke to Mark and seeing from an outside perspective what they want to achieve, I was keen to be apart of the journey and helping the team in anyway I can to push for the Super 8s and ultimately promotion.”
Cian joins Leigh Leopards’ Will Brough and Hull KR’s Kye Armstrong ahead of transfer deadline day and goes straight into contention for Mark Dunning’s 21-man squad to face Whitehaven on Sunday.
