THREE PLAYERS ENTERING SECOND YEAR OF DEALS

Trio of Canes entering final year of current two-year deals

As fans will have noticed from the flurry of announcements, Mark, Leigh and the rest of the backroom team at the Canes have been beavering about locking down various players and recruiting new faces for the 2025 season. There are, however, a few players who had already committed to the Canes for next season and it would be rude not to mention them now!

David Hewitt first signed for the club at the start of the 2024 season following the expiry of his contract with Rochdale Hornets at the end of 2023. Notwithstanding him suffering with a niggling groin injury towards the end of the season and competing for a place with Jake Sweeting, Callum McLelland and Brad Billsborough, Chewy scored two tries and kicked fifty goals in 15 appearances for the club. We’re very excited to see what the 29 year old can do for the Canes in 2025.

Aaron Willis has a slightly longer history with the club, having first featured on dual-registration from Super League club Castleford Tigers during the 2023 season, making 14 appearances and scoring two tries as he went on to win the club’s Young Player of the Year Award. The 20 year old clearly enjoyed his time with the Canes as he elected to sign a two-year deal with the club, where he has regularly featured as a starting second row or an impact player from the bench ever since. Aaron has made 21 appearances this season, scoring two tries.

Marcus Green is another player with a previous history of playing for the Canes, having made three appearances on loan from Bradford Bulls (then coached by none other than Mark Dunning) during the 2022 season. Following a handful of appearances for the Bulls and ten appearances on loan for Hunslet during the 2023 season, Marcus chose to work with Mark once again by signing a two-year deal from 2024. The 21-year old prop made 21 appearances this season, primarily from the bench, but will no doubt be pushing for a place in the starting 13 for the 2025 season.

We’re looking forward to seeing all three in action next season, but keep your eyes peeled for more squad news!
