RYAN JOHNSON #JOINSTHESTORM UNTIL 2026
Johnson signs permanent two-year deal with the Canes
We are delighted to confirm that we have signed young back Ryan Johnson a two-year deal following his release from Sheffield Eagles.
Jono, 24, started his career at the City of Hull Academy before signing with Hull FC and featuring in the club’s reserve side. This attracted the attention of Sheffield Eagles who signed him on an initial one year deal before the start of the 2021 season, where he went on to score 14 tries in 38 appearances on the back of signing a three-year extension until the end of this season.
After featuring regularly for the Eagles in 2021 and 2022, Ryan joined the Canes on dual-registration 11 times in 2023 (scoring three tries) and 14 times this season (scoring eight tries) as he quickly became a fan favourite for his strong running game, quality finishing and high work ethic. We cannot wait to see what Jono can do in a Canes journey for the next two seasons now he will be a permanent fixture of the Canes squad.
Head Coach Mark Dunning on permanently signing Jono:
“We’re delighted to welcome Ryan into the club on a permanent basis following his regular dual-registration with our club over the last two years.
When I was made aware of him becoming available it was a really straight-forward deal to do.
We’re excited to see Jono continue his development and progression in a Canes shirt and look forward to seeing him working hard and expressing himself over the next two years.”
Jono on signing with the club:
“After being on dual-registration for the last couple of seasons I’ve seen the potential with Midlands. I enjoy the group we have here and I enjoy the environment.
We’re a club going in the right direction and that’s why I’ve made the easy decision of signing here permanently for the next two years.”
We have plenty more announcements to make in the off-season, so watch this space!
