HARTLEY IS A HURRICANE

Loanee joins the Canes permanently from Hunslet

We are delighted to announce that we have signed winger Joe Hartley from Championship outfit Hunslet on a permanent deal until the end of the 2025 season.

Joe, 26, has made over 50 appearances in League One since making his professional debut with Oldham in 2021. After three seasons, 35 appearances and 11 tries with the Roughyeds, Joe moved to Oldham’s historic rivals Rochdale Hornets where he scored eight tries in ten matches before joining fellow League One side Workington Town on loan where he scored three tries in six matches (including a brace against the Hurricanes at The Alex).

Those efforts saw him snapped up by recently promoted Hunslet ahead of their 2025 Championship campaign, but so far Joe’s only competitive fixture of 2025 saw him feature for the Canes on loan against Keighley Cougars during our 7-6 1895 Second Preliminary Round defeat at Cougar Park. After training with the Canes for a number of weeks his temporary stay with Midlands has been made permanent, and to get him back to match fitness the Canes have allowed him to feature for his community club of Oldham St Anne’s in the National Conference League Division One on dual-registration.

Joe had this to say on joining the Canes:

I’m really happy to have signed for Midlands for the rest of the season and I am grateful to Mark and everyone else at the club for this opportunity.

After a short loan spell at the club, I could see immediately that they were a great club with even better ambitions and it was something I really wanted to get involved with.

The lads and coaches made me feel very welcome from day one and I’m now hoping I can contribute to the team and its success when my opportunity comes.

Speaking with CanesTV, Head Coach Mark Dunning said:

We’re pleased to welcome Joe and his family to the Canes family on a permanent basis.

Joe spent some time with us on loan and fit in really well with the team and culture which is testament to him and his character.

He has plenty of ability and experience at this level which will add strength in depth to our options in the outside backs.

With Joe only playing once since September, we will allow Joe to go on dual-registration with his community club in the National Conference League to get some valuable game time whilst he pushes for his opportunity to get into the first team.
