Cornwall representatives to attend Midlands fan event in May
We are pleased to confirm that, following discussions between the two clubs, representatives and players from Cornwall RLFC will be attending our “Be a Cane” event at Bournville RFC on Saturday 3 May. This means fans will have an opportunity to meet and interact with both management and players from both the Canes and the Choughs in what promises to be an exciting day for rugby league in the Midlands.
News about Cornwall’s decision to withdraw from Betfred League One a couple of weeks ago rippled through the UK rugby league media, and fans who had already made plans to travel south to Penryn will know that the weekend of 3 May would have been when the Choughs were due to host the Canes at the Memorial Ground. Whilst that won’t happen this year, Hurricanes Chairman Mike Lomas has been in regular contact with Cornwall General Manager John Beach about the club’s predicament and has identified our Be a Cane event as the perfect opportunity to both engage the local fanbase and to celebrate the achievements that John and his team achieved in bringing professional rugby league to a new region in Cornwall.
Speaking with Canes TV, Hurricanes Chairman Mike Lomas said:
“The last three years of being involved with the Midlands Hurricanes have been an absolute rollercoaster with many different challenges and successes.
When I first became involved with the Midlands Hurricanes I remember it was Cornwall’s first season. During that season it was safe to say we were both ‘finding our feet’ and this presented a healthy rivalry at the bottom quarter of the league one table. With this rivalry, fond friendships were developed, which remain to this day.
When I learnt the news about Cornwall from my friend, and GM of Cornwall, John Beech, I was gutted for the club as a whole. It takes a lot of courage to put your head above the parapet and do something different in Rugby League, these guys did just that. They formed a new branch of Rugby League in a relatively new area. If anyone had been to a game there, it was a great occasion!
I’m delighted to welcome John and the Cornwall team to join us for the ‘Cane for a Day’ event on what would have been the weekend we played Cornwall in Penryn. This day will welcome the local community to grow Rugby League in the Midlands, but also serve as a celebration for the achievements over the last three years our friends at Cornwall achieved.”
We also spoke with John Beach, General Manager at Cornwall RLFC, who had this to say:
“A little over three years ago, we welcomed the Midlands Hurricanes to the Memorial Ground for our very first home game. While the result on the field didn’t go our way, what emerged that day was a healthy rivalry and some truly valued friendships.
There’s a strong sense of unity among those working behind the scenes at non-heartlands clubs—we all understand the challenges that come with growing this great sport in new regions.
Mike Lomas and everyone at the Hurricanes have been incredible advocates for what we’re striving to achieve in Cornwall. I have the utmost respect for Mike, Mark Dunning, and everyone at the club for what they’re building in the Second City. Rugby League will be a much stronger sport with a thriving Midlands Hurricanes.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mike, Mark, and the entire Hurricanes team for their continued friendship, support, and kind invitation. I’m sure this event will be another fantastic occasion for the sport in the Midlands. And to the Canes supporters—thank you for always offering a warm welcome off the field and an electric atmosphere once the whistle blows.”
