Another year for Super Matty Welham!
This week continues to be good news for Canes fans as we are delighted to confirm that Matty Welham has joined Brad Clavering and will play his fourth successive season for the Canes in 2024. As with Clav, we expect to be welcoming Matt to the 50+ club next year.
Following spells Doncaster, Hemel Stags and Keighley Cougars, Matty joined the Canes in 2021 and linked up with big brother Liam who joined during 2020’s curtailed season. Matt has gone from strength to strength during his time with the Canes and currently has 25 tries in 45 appearances under his belt. He is also currently the Canes’ top try-scorer for 2023 with 12 tries. He continues to be a threat with ball in hand and his fends are a source of frustration for defenders across League One. We can’t wait to see him in a Canes shirt next year.
Hurricanes media team caught up with head coach Mark Dunning and here is what he had to say
“Matty committing to the club for another year is a real boost and everyone is delighted. Along with Brad we have started with the retention of our existing players, and there will be more announced in due course.
Matty is a quality player who bring versatility and leadership to our group as well as being a quality person and pro.”
Want to see if Matty can add to his tally for 2023? Come and cheer him and the rest of the lads as we take on Rochdale on Sunday! Make sure to book your place on the coach for free here as places are limited. The Supporters Club is also encouraging all travelling Canes fans to sit in Block C of Spotland Stadium (the small section towards the middle of the pitch) so we can cheer on Brad and the boys together. Tickets can be purchased from the Rochdale Hornets website here.
