DICKINSON JOINS THE STORM

Experienced Championship prop joins the Canes

We are pleased to confirm the signing of Tyler Dickinson on a 12-month deal (with an option for a further 12-month extension) following his release from Sheffield Eagles.

Dickinson, who only turned 29 a couple of months ago, has over 200 career appearances to his name with the bulk of those coming during his five-season stint at Championship side Sheffield Eagles. Starting his professional career with Super League side Huddersfield Giants, he went on to make his professional debut at just 18 years old whilst on loan for Championship stalwarts Halifax in 2015. He would also go on an extended loan-spell with fellow League One outfit Keighley Cougars later that season.

He would go on to make his Super League debut in Round 4 of the 2016 Super League season against local rivals Leeds Rhinos at the now-named Accu Stadium. Whilst he would not feature for the Giants again that season, he still secured valuable game time by going to Championship side Oldham on a season-long loan where he made just under 20 appearances in addition to a single appearance for League One side Newcastle Thunder. His efforts on loan would secure him a semi-regular position in the Huddersfield first team during the 2017 and 2018 campaigns, however he would once again go out on loan to Oldham as well as Workington Town during those seasons.

Leaving the Giants at the end of 2018 in pursuit of a guaranteed first-team place, the then-22 year old Dickinson moved to Championship side Batley Bulldogs ahead of the 2019 season. He would make just under 20 appearances for them that year - scoring three tries in the process - before making a sole appearance in 2020 when the Championship (and League One) seasons were cancelled after a couple of rounds due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. He would leave the Bulldogs at the end of that year to link up with Sheffield Eagles ahead of the 2021 season.

Quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite, Tyler has been a regular feature of the Eagles squad and - after an initial starting position on the bench - would frequently find himself in the front row during his first year with the club. He would go on to secure that position for another four seasons as his strength and athleticism were recognised by former Eagles Head Coach Mark Aston and current Head Coach Craig Lingard. Whilst his appearances for Sheffield were cut short mid-way through 2025 due to Tyler battling an illness, he is now fully recovered and raring to go with a new challenge in the shape of The Alexander Stadium.

Speaking with CanesTV, Head Coach Mark Dunning said this of landing Tyler:

“We’re delighted to welcome Tyler and his family to the Canes and the wider Canes family, which I hope our fans will agree is growing nicely this season.

Tyler is a top middle-unit player who in his last few years at Sheffield has contributed to an impressive top four finish and a Wembley appearance in the 1895 Cup.

In signing Tyler we have managed to secure a quality player with over 200 career games under his belt and at just 29 years of age I firmly believe he’s coming in to the prime of his career, which means we may be able to witness his very best performances here at The Alex.

Everyone at the club is excited to see that possibility played out in a Hurricanes shirt next season.”

CanesTV also spoke with Tyler about his decision to swap Sheffield for the Canes:

“‘After five years with Sheffield Eagles in the Championship, I am really looking forward to a new challenge in the form of Midlands Hurricanes. The club has a lot of ambition and has been constantly improving whilst striving for better and better things, and their signings this year show they are keen to hit the ground running next season.

I personally feel like I’m coming into the prime of my career, so I’m really hoping I can add something special to the squad as they experience their first year in the Championship. I’m excited to link up with Mark, Leigh and the rest of the squad shortly when the 2026 pre-season gets underway.”

Tyler becomes our lucky number seven in terms of new signings, following the confirmation that Lewis Else, Danny Craven, Cian Tyrer, Oliver Roberts, Zach Jebson and Owen Restall will be joining the storm for the 2026 season. We can confirm we have at least one more new signing for you (in addition to other retention news) so make sure to watch this space for more exciting updates on the squad Mark Dunning is constructing for our first ever season in the Betfred Championship!
