TYRER JOINS THE STORM

Canes 2025 loanee turns permanent for 2026

We are pleased to confirm that we have signed winger Cian Tyrer on a 12-month deal following his release from fellow Championship side Oldham.

The 24-year old’s rugby career began via' Wigan Warriors’ academy system before he signed his first professional contract with Newcastle Thunder for the 2021 season at the age of just 19. Cian made four appearances and scored a try before joining Rochdale Hornets on loan for the rest of that season, where he went on to score two tries in six games. His temporary stay at the Crown Oil Arena became permanent as he went on to sign a contract with Rochdale for the 2022 season, where he scored an impressive 18 tries in 22 games. Tyrer’s ability to score tries at will saw him earn an extension to his contract for the 2023 season and he continued his impressive try-scoring form with eight tries in 16 games.

For the 2024 season Tyrer swapped Rochdale Hornets for their Greater Manchester rivals Oldham on an initial one-year deal. During a season where Oldham comfortably secured promotion to the Championship , Tyrer’s try-scoring ability excelled as he netted 29 tries in just 13 games, 10 of those coming in back-to-back games against Hunslet (6) and Cornwall (4). Towards the end of that season he would go out on loan to fellow League One side Workington Town, making two appearances and scoring one try.

Whilst he secured an extension to his Oldham contract for the 2025 season, he only made a single appearance for the Roughyeds against Barrow Raiders towards the start of the season before making two loan appearances for former club Rochdale Hornets against Workington and Swinton. He spent the final month of the season on loan with the Canes alongside Will Brough, Kye Armstrong and Lewis Peachey, with the plucky winger scoring two tries in three appearances including winning an impressive footrace against Newcastle Thunder on the final day of the season.

Cian will be looking to add to that tally next season as he formally joins the club on a permanent basis, providing ample competition for existing wingers Matty Chrimes and Luis Roberts.

CanesTV spoke with Cian following his decision to permanently join the Canes for next season:

“I really enjoyed my time on loan for the final month of the season and jumped at the chance to make that move permanent. From the players to the staff that makes the club run I felt at home from the get go and and can’t wait to be apart of the journey.

Having seen the setup of the club and what they are wanting to build in the years to come, it was a no brainer to stay at the club to be apart of that.”

CanesTV also spoke with Head Coach Mark Dunning on securing Tyrer for next season:

“We’re delighted to welcome Danny and his family to the club as they all become part of the Canes family.

When I met up with Danny it was clear he was excited about joining the journey that we’re on as a club and that he would add value.

He’s been there, seen it and done it at both Half back and full back and his game management is something that we lacked at times this season.

Danny also possesses a very strong kicking and running game which along with his experience is another exciting addition to our spine and one I’m sure Canes fans will be looking forward to seeing in 2026.”

Tyrer is our third new signing announcement for 2026 (following Lewis Else and Danny Craven’s announcements) and sixth squad announcement during the off-season (following confirmation of Todd Horner, Jon-Luke Kirby and Kieran Moran all being retained for 2026). We’ve got plenty more to share with you in the coming weeks so make sure to keep an eye on this website and our socials for more squad news!
