LUIS ROBERTS JOINS THE STORM
Ex-Salford and Leeds back signs one-year deal
We are delighted to confirm that we have signed Welsh international Luis Roberts on a deal until the end of the 2025 season following his departure from Super League stalwarts Leeds Rhinos.
Luis, 22, already has a wealth of experience at both Super League and Championship level and has amassed over 60 appearances for club and country. Having made his Super League debut for the Red Devils at just 18 years old during their 20-18 victory over Warrington Wolves, Luis went on to make a further appearance in the 2020 season as the Red Devils narrowly lost to Hull Kingston Rovers shortly after it was announced that he would join Championship rivals Swinton Lions for the 2021 season.
Luis featured 20 times for the Lions - scoring 10 tries - however Swinton struggled in a competitive Championship and finished in the bottom two with Greater Manchester rivals Oldham, consigning them to Betfred League One for 2022. Luis’ performances for the Sale-based club saw him earn a contract with his hometown club Leigh Centurions (as they then were) for the 2022 season, where he made six appearances before joining fellow Championship side Widnes Vikings on loan for the remainder of the season, scoring one try in eight appearances for the Chemics.
Roberts then attracted the attention of former Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos, who signed the then-20 year old on a two-year contract for the 2023 season. Luis went on to make nine appearances for the Rhinos in his first year with the club, scoring one try, as well as making three appearances and scoring one try whilst on Dual-Registration with Championship outfit (and former Super League Champions) Bradford Bulls. He made 13 further appearances for the Rhinos last season, scoring four tries, as the Rhinos finished outside of the Super League play-offs.
Despite his young years, Luis Roberts quickly appeared on the radar of Welsh Head Coach John Kear. He made his senior international debut for Wales in 2022 during their 34-10 mid-season international defeat to France in Albi, before going on to earn a second cap against Jamaica in Wales’ 22-16 World Cup Qualifying warm-up match against Jamaica. We are confident Luis’ future will involve plenty more appearances for the Welsh.
We spoke with Luis on his decision to sign with the Canes for this season:
“I’m really excited to have signed with the Hurricanes for the 2025 season. I can’t wait for the Betfred League One campaign to get started this weekend and to be able to rip in with the rest of the squad.”
We also spoke with Head Coach Mark Dunning, who had this to say on signing Luis for 2025:
“We’re delighted to welcome Luis and his family to the Canes and our wider family.
When I was made aware of Luis’ availability and his eagerness to join the group, it was a no brainer to sign him. Luis is an international player with experience at the top level of our game and I was amazed to hear he was without a club and potentially lost to our game altogether. We have welcomed him in to the group where he will instantly creates competition and bring a lot of strike on our edges.
He’s a good lad with a real side before self mentality, meaning he will fit in to our group of lads very well.”
Roberts goes straight into contention for Sunday’s Betfred League One opener against Goole Vikings at the Victoria Pleasure Ground.
