NOMINEES FOR 2025 SUPPORTERS CLUB PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Supporters Club confirm four candidates for annual fans award

Following discussions and initial voting between members of the committee, the Midlands Hurricanes Supporters Club have confirmed the four players who have been nominated for the 2025 Supporters Club Player of the Year.

Voting is now open and will close at midnight on Wednesday 3 September 2025, with the winner being announced at our End of Season Awards at The Alexander Stadium on Sunday 7 September 2025. Fans can vote on our Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as the poll now pinned to our Twitter/X account.

As a brief reminder, previous winners of the Supporters Club Player of the Year are:

2022 - Elliott Windley
2023 - Sam Bowring
2024 - Tom Wilkinson

This season’s nominees are:

Matty Chrimes
A notable fan favourite, Matty joined the Canes mid-way through last season on a 2-and-a-half year deal and made an immediate impact by scoring seven tries in just 11 league appearances as the Canes made the Betfred League One play-offs for the very first time.

Chrimes, 27, has continued his prolific try-scoring form in 2025 and looks guaranteed to finish the season as the Canes’ top try-scorer (currently sitting on 12 tries in 16 appearances), although fellow winger Luis Roberts and centre Ross Oakes are proving worthy challengers to that accolade. Matty has also found his kicking boots in the absence of our regular kicker Jake Sweeting, with the winger kicking 10 out of 15 conversion attempts across three games.

Jon-Luke Kirby
Kirby, 26, joined the Canes as one of Head Coach Mark Dunning’s first signings after joining the club mid-way through the 2023 season. Jon was subsequently appointed Vice-Captain for the 2024 Betfred League One campaign and retained that position for this season. Following lengthy spells on the sidelines this season for Callum McLelland, Jon has had to make the step up to makeshift Captain and has risen to the task admirably.

Jon’s efforts this season have been recognised by coaches and fans alike, with the prop earning multiple Man of the Match awards. His efforts have also been recognised in the rugby league process as he was selected for Rugby League World’s League One Team of the Month on two separate occasions.

Danny Barcoe
The author of our barmy match-winning song (“Heads on Fire”) and the 2024 Players’ Player of the Year is on for back-to-back nominations for Supporters’ Player of the Year after being nominated last season (but ultimately pipped to the award by Tom Wilkinson).

Danny, 25, joined the Canes around the same time as Jon-Luke Kirby as a host of initial signings by Head Coach Mark Dunning towards the end of the 2023 season. His first full season with the Canes was a strong one as the hooker went on to score seven tries in 23 appearances. Whilst he has only scored two tries in 17 appearances this season, his efforts from dummy-half and willingness to step in as a makeshift half-back during the Canes ongoing injury crisis has been lauded by everyone at the club.

Zeus Silk
The man with arguably the best name in rugby league is the most recent signing of the four nominees, joining the Canes at the start of this season following his release from Dewsbury Rams at the end of the 2024 season. Known for his hard-hitting style and unrelenting efforts when carrying the ball, Zeus has quickly established himself as a fan favourite amongst the Canes supporters.

As of this article Zeus, 27 has made 19 appearances and scored two tries in a season where he has featured in all but one game for the Canes, a feat only matched by hooker Aiden Roden and surpassed only by centre Ross Oakes (who has played in every game for the Canes this year).
