MATCH PREVIEW: MIDLANDS WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP (ROUND TWO)

Our women’s team pose after two First Round games at Leamington RFC

Midlands Women’s Championship comes to The Alex

After the First Round of fixtures of the Midlands Women’s Championship got underway at Leamington Rugby Club last Sunday, it is the Canes turn to host the next round of fixtures at The Alexander Stadium in what promises to be an action-packed Sunday of rugby league in Birmingham.

Women’s Head Coach Jamie-Lee Jones will be pleased with the resilience Captain Alex Stock and her ladies displayed last weekend, going toe-to-toe with two established women’s sides in Coventry Bears and Leamington Royals. Assistant Coach Ben Edwards considered the Canes to be unlucky to only secure a 4-4 draw during their first game against Coventry, with the two sides deadlocked despite some promising opportunities in attack from Heather Britton. The Canes ultimately fell to a 24-4 defeat to 2024 Champions Leamington Royals in their second game, however Ben and Jamie were pleased with a strong second half performance against tough opposition on their own turf.

Turning to Sunday’s games, Alex Stock and her ladies will first take on Nottingham Outlaws, who played their First Round fixtures at Telford Hornets RFC against Telford Raiders and Sheffield Eagles. Nottingham fell to a heavy 36-0 defeat to Telford Raiders (who also made short work of Sheffield Eagles with a 48-0 win) but were able to secure a 10-10 draw with Nottingham in their second game. Our women will then take on Leamington Royals in their return fixture, with the Canes hoping to make amends for last week’s defeat.

In-between the Canes games, Leamington Royals will play their return fixture against Coventry Bears (with Leamington looking for revenge after their 4-8 defeat to the Bears last week), followed by Coventry Bears taking on Nottingham Outlaws.
