JOSE KENGA ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Kenga in action against Whitehaven in the 1895 Cup
Prop decides to call time on career
We are sad to announce that, following discussions with Head Coach Mark Dunning, Jose Kenga has announced his retirement from professional rugby with immediate effect to focus on commitments outside of the sport.
Jose made eight appearances for the Canes across three spells with the club, the first coming from a sole loan appearance towards the end of the 2022 season whilst part of Swinton Lions. Jose went on to make a further five appearances on loan for the Canes towards the end of the 2024 season as he helped Midlands make the League One Play-Offs for the first time, as well as being part of the side that got us to the Elimination Semi-Final by toppling Workington Town at The Alex.
His appearances last season earned him a permanent deal with the Canes for this year, where he went on to make two appearances (v Whitehaven and Keighley Cougars in the 1895 Cup) as well as being named 18th man for both of our League One fixtures against Goole Vikings and Workington Town.
Speaking with the club, Jose had this to say on his decision to retire:
“I’d like to thank all people involved with the Canes a special mention to the boys, Mark and the rest of the staff for being so understanding of my decision to call it a day in my playing career. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play part in the Midlands story.
Due to all my commitments away from the game I’ve decided to retire. I’ve truly enjoyed my time at Midlands since joining the club on loan but now I feel very ready for the next chapter of my life.
There are big things to come for the club and I wish them all the best.”
Speaking with CanesTV, Mark Dunning had this to say on Jose’s departure from the club and the game:
“After a couple of chats with Jose it’s very clear that he has reached the point in his life where rugby has to give way to family and work life.
I along with everyone else connected to the club are sad to see him retire, he was a big part of our squad and a pleasure to coach and be around.
Everyone connected to our club is grateful to Jose and his family for their contribution and thankful that he has had the opportunity to leave the game on his terms which is something that not every player gets.
I’m sure he will continue to be successful outside of Rugby League and I wish him and his family all the very best for their next chapter.”
Jose was sponsored by Longbridge Taiho Jutsu for the 2025 season.
