DAVEY DIXON SIGNS UNTIL 2025!

Canes snap up Scottish international

We are delighted to confirm that we have signed Scottish international Davey Dixon with immediate effect until the end of the 2025 season!

Dixon, 27 - who can play at fullback, wing or centre - has over 100 appearances for club and country at both Championship and League One level. He is also no stranger to Head Coach Mark Dunning and Assistant Coach Leigh Beattie, who he will link up with once again after being part of the Scottish Rugby League coaching team that saw Dixon make his Rugby League World Cup debut during Scotland's 30-14 defeat to eventual quarter-finalists Fiji. This was only one of seven appearances Dixon has made for The Bravehearts, where he has scored three tries (most recently in a friendly versus Jamaica in 2021).

Davey's rugby league career began at Featherstone Rovers, but he initially joined Super League club Warrington Wolves' academy and then joined fellow Super League club Castleford Tigers' under-19 squad, where he was named their most improved player for the 2016 season. It was accolades like this that no doubt earned him a move to Keighley Cougars later that year, where he went on to make his first-team debut and score 16 tries in 50 League One appearances between 2017-2019.

At just 22 years of age his performances for the Cougars drew the attention of Dewsbury Rams who snapped him up for the 2020 season, where he went on to score 14 tries in 44 appearances and was part of the 2023 squad that earned automatic promotion from League One to the Championship.

Davey had this to say on signing for the Canes until 2025:

One of the biggest factors in signing for Midlands Hurricanes was Mark having previously worked with him at Scotland, I really liked the way he coached, his man management and his total honesty. Speaking to him about the direction the club is going in and the plan for the future it was exciting and I wanted to be a part of that. I already know a lot of the players which also helped my decision, a few of them are my old team mates so I’m sure it won’t take Long to gel with the team.

Having been at a club for a long time you get comfortable and I feel like it was time for a change and a new challenge, a challenge that excites me. I believe that I’ve still got a lot more improvement in my game and I’m confident with this coaching staff that they can bring the best out of me.

I went down to training on Tuesday and met all the boys and the coaching staff and everyone was so welcoming, the training session was very professional and the standards were very high, you can see the work that has been put in by everyone involved with the club.

Finally, I would like to thank Dewsbury for the last few years and wish them all the best for the future.”

Head Coach Mark Dunning had this to say on signing Davey:

“We are very happy to welcome Davey and his family to the club and in to the Hurricanes family.

Davey is a utility back who can cover 1-5 to a high standard, he can certainly finish an opportunity as well creating them for others. He brings with him a good amount of experience both domestically in Championship and League 1 as well as internationally with Scotland, where Leigh and I have previously worked with him. He ticks all the boxes we look for in recruits, he’s a good bloke, willing to work hard and 100% buys into the project. He’s excited by the journey.

We’re excited by Davey’s addition to our squad and look forward to seeing the positive competition it will create. I’m very sure he will become a crowd favourite with our fantastic Canes supporters quickly.”

Davey slots right into contention for this Sunday's away clash versus Hunslet at the South Leeds Stadium – keep your eyes peeled as Mark names his 21-man squad on Friday.
