CANES SIGN HANLEY FOR 2025

Young outside back joins the storm for 2025

We are pleased to announce we have signed versatile youngster Matthew Hanley from Super League club Huddersfield Giants.

Hanley, who can play at fullback, centre or on the wing, has been part of the Huddersfield Giants scholarship and academy squads over a number of years. His performances at these levels attracted the attention of Head of England Pathways, Paul Anderson, who selected Matty as part of the Yorkshire squad for the 2023 Academy Origin series. 2024 saw him take on the new challenge of featuring regularly in Huddersfield’s reserve squad, but Matthew will no doubt hope that 2025 will see him make his professional debut in a Hurricanes shirt under Mark Dunning and Leigh Beattie’s tutelage.

Matty on joining the Canes:

This is a great opportunity for me and it’s a honour to sign for Midlands Hurricanes. I can’t wait to show everyone what I can do and I’m looking forward to seeing what is in store for the 2025 season.

Head Coach Mark Dunning on signing Matty:

We’re delighted to welcome Matty to the club and our Canes family.

Matty is a talented young man who offers a lot of flexibility to our outside backs and his ability has seen him in recent times selected to play origin for Yorkshire as part of the England pathway system.

With that system, alongside the quality system he has been at as part of the Huddersfield Giants, we’re looking forward to seeing him work hard to make an impression on our squad.

He’s a young man still learning his trade in the world of rugby league, but we’re confident that he can do that effectively here at the Canes.

Matty becomes our 10th new signing for the 2025 season. If you want to see Matty in action for 2025, make sure you get your Season Ticket tomorrow morning so you don’t miss a second of the action at The Alexander Stadium!
